GREEN ROADS 1752

Blumenbach was born 11 May 1752 in Gotha, Germany. His mother, Charlotte Eleonore Hedwig Buddeus, was the daughter of a high-ranking official in Gotha's government. Blumenbach's father, Heinrich Blumenbach, was the assistant headmaster at the local gymnasium, or primary school. Blumenbach completed his early education in Gotha, graduating from the gymnasium in 1769. After graduation, he attended the University of Jena, in Jena, Germany, before moving to the University of Göttingen, in Göttingen, Germany. While a student at the University of Göttingen, Blumenbach studied with naturalist Christian W. Büttner. Büttner taught Blumenbach via his lectures on exotic cultures and peoples, and he encouraged Blumenbach to write his dissertation on such communities.

Since the King and Parliament have thought fit to alter our Year, by taking eleven Days out of September, 1752, and directing us to begin our Account for the future on the First of January,3 some Account of the Changes the Year hath heretofore undergone, and the Reasons of them, may a little gratify thy Curiosity.

In the Year 1700, the Error of ten Days was grown to eleven; upon which the Protestant States of Germany, to prevent further Confusion, accepted the Gregorian Correction. And now in 1752, the English follow their Example.

Neighborhood open spaces (NOSs), typically parks, provide destinations to which people can walk and are ideal settings for leisure-time physical activity.4 Adults with better access to neighborhood green spaces have shown enhanced physical health, which in part is mediated through elevated levels of walking.5 Promoting walking is a centerpiece of public health strategy for preventing major chronic diseases, because of its popularity and known health benefits.6,7 NOS is thus an important resource that has the potential to facilitate more active lifestyles. In addition, there is growing evidence that exposure to natural environments is restorative and beneficial to mental health.5,8 Given the burden of disease associated with physical inactivity and poor mental health,9 understanding how to design NOS to attract residents and encourage use is likely to help enhance population health.4

The exposure variables we used included 3 attributes of NOS: attractiveness, size, and distance from a participant's home through the road network. Attractiveness was computed as a weighted mean score of 9 attributes including the presence of walking paths, shade, water features, irrigated lawn, lighting, sporting facilities, and birdlife; type of surrounding roads; and being adjacent to a beach or river. These attributes and their weights were determined based on the recommendation of an expert panel; a detailed description is reported elsewhere.20 The size of and network distance to each NOS were determined using GISs.

3. No one knows today when the Bell was cracked. The crack is a big subject of debate among historians. One theory is the Bell got its first crack in 1752 when it was tested upon its arrival in Philadelphia.
