Longtime Movieweb contributor that was uploading 1-minute movie reviews to the world wide web via AOL before Youtube or social media existed. I make tons of straight-to-video movies you can find at Amazon & Vimeo. DVDs are back and I like it!

I have spoken extensively about the importance of gentle morning routines on here before, and I have a little update in that realm before we dive into the reading: a couple days ago, I purchased an annual subscription for The Practice Co. The Practice Co is a devotional app encouraging holistic, inclusive, and embodied spirituality. Historically, I haven’t had much genuine interest in daily Bible studies, and I think that the immense pressure placed on Christians to “spend time in the Word everyday” is yet another example of evangelicalism failing to get its priorities straight. However, I do love my routines- coffee, morning sunlight, and something meaningful and hopeful to read. So, it was with that in mind that I decided to download this app. I have really enjoyed the two-minute readings so far, and I would recommend them for anyone else who finds themselves in a similar place spiritually.

I think that the answer is simpler than many of us would like to believe. Kiki’s Delivery Service is very much in the same vein of other family-friendly films with an eye for beauty and simplicity, like The Secret of Kells or Song of the Sea (and yes, I will absolutely be writing about both of these at a later date). These movies make a point of romanticising the little things in life, whether it be cooking a delicious breakfast, or lying in the grass listening to music. “Mundane” isn’t all that different from “magical”, movies like Kiki’s Delivery Service suggest to the audience. After all, how is it that Kiki manages to get her flying abilities back? (Warning! Spoiler incoming!) She listens to the advice of her spunky artist friend, Ursula, who tells her:

Now, I am not suggesting that dark academia and cottagecore are the solutions to my aforementioned question. My point is this: because we are human, there is something about Studio Ghibli movies and the cottagecore aesthetic and Annie Dillard’s writing that speaks to the most fundamental parts of who we are. And I think that a significant part of that is a hunger for beauty and a desire for goodness, both of which occur regardless of how naturally inexhaustible we are in our individual pursuits.

In addition to this, I think a good rule of thumb overall is to live your life like you are a character in a Studio Ghibli movie. Because goodness, the Studio Ghibli cast of characters give us plenty of examples of cultivating wonder in their daily lives: tending to the garden, walking by the seaside with a friend, enjoying mouth-watering ramen after a long day. Being thoroughly alive isn’t just about an arbitrary, overarching plot at any point during our lives- it is about the everyday sort of magic, experiences that prompt nostalgia ten years later because you wish you had been more present in that sweet, sacred moment. And that is why Kiki’s Delivery Service could never just be described as the story of a witch who loses her ability to fly and then gets her powers back. To do so would be to miss the point of the movie entirely. Coming-of-age tales are rarely all about the transition from Point A to Point B- they are about the in-between, the messy, the not-yet, and the becoming. They are about life, in its complete fullness and messiness and overwhelming beauty. Kiki’s story is no different.

While some reported the content of the flashback episode to be short-lived, others experienced a more protracted experience reliving the entire distressing episode.I'll go through the whole thing. Like it will run from start to finish like a movie. Its very hard to switch off once I've started thinking about it, it has to play out if you like 2F 2ff7e9595c
